What are University of California Merit Scholarships?
University of California Merit Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students based on their academic accomplishments. These awards are given to incoming freshmen and transfer students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and potential. Scholarships may be fully funded, partially funded, or awards.
The University of California offers several different Merit Scholarships such as the Distinguished Scholarship, the Regents’ Scholarship, the Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship, and the Directors’ Scholarship. The Distinguished Scholarship does not require an application and is based on the UC application for admission. The Regents’ Scholarship, Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship, and Directors’ Scholarship require a comprehensive review of the applicant, including test scores and grades, to determine eligibility. In addition, these scholarships require that students be U.S. citizens, eligible non-citizens, or students qualifying under AB130 or AB131. The Directors’ Scholarship also requires that students be first-generation college students with demonstrated financial need in order to be eligible.
Scholarships are applied for through Scholarship Universe, and financial aid is determined through the FAFSA or the California Dream Act Application.

How to apply for the University of California Merit Scholarships?
Step 1: Submit your UC Application for Admission and Scholarships by the designated deadlines. Freshman applicants must submit their application by November 30th and transfer applicants must submit their application by February 1st to be considered for the Regents’ Scholarship and Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship.
Step 2: Create a profile on ScholarshipUniverse, an online platform that matches you to relevant scholarships based on your personalized profile.
Step 3: File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application to determine your eligibility for need-based scholarships.
Step 4: Complete an online application at https://ucsd.academicworks.com for any of the listed continuing undergraduate scholarships. The deadline for this application is March 2nd, 2023.
Step 5: Submit your resume, vitae and/or creative representations of your qualifications, one letter of recommendation and a student essay showing your involvement and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice to ucsd.academicworks.com.
Step 6: Check your application status online at https://ucsd.academicworks.com. Notification of any scholarship awards will be sent in August.
Step 7: No application is required for the Distinguished Scholarship category. Students are automatically considered for the scholarships in this category based on their UC Application for Admission. To be considered for these scholarships, you must submit your application for fall admission by November 30th.
